Satang Besar Island has been the sanctuary for sea turtles besides two other islands in the South-western part of Sarawak since time immemorial. The turtles come to nest on the islang throughout the year, but the main season falls between April and September each year. Sea turtles are fully protected animals under the Malaysian Wildlife Law. Their eggs are collected and hatched under the Conservation and Rehabilitation Program carried out by Sarawak Government.
Hence a one chain foreshore area was reserved by the Government in 1957 to enable the respective Government agencies to have the right to collect the turtle eggs and to manage the operation of the conservation and rehabilitation activities.
The water within 4.8km radius from the highest point on then island has been gazetted as the Marine National Parks and Nature Reserves. Any diving activities planned with your visit to this island MUST have a written permit from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation. The underwater landscape around this island is fascinating with various types of corals and enchanting varieties of fishes and other life forms.
